Jennifer Clare Paulson

Jennifer moved to Madison from Chicago to study viola at the University, where she earned a DMA degree in viola performance with a minor in jazz studies. She got her Master’s degree in viola performance at Northwestern University while playing in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago under the baton of many great conductors including Daniel Barenboim and Pierre Boulez. JCP earned her bachelors degree at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. During that time, she studied viola and Japanese koto at school while writing music, performing and recording with the pop-ternative band Bev.
She is currently a member of the Madison Symphony Orchestra and Green Bay Symphony and has had the privilege to work with John and Rose Mary Harbison the during their Token Creek Chamber Music Festival for the past few summers. JCP also teaches studio viola and violin at UW-Whitewater, where she coaches the Echelon String Quartet - a student ensemble focusing on rock and jazz influenced new works. In addition to regional work in chamber music and orchestral settings, JCP performs with several new music ensembles based in Chicago including Kyle Bruckmann’s WRACK, PPK, Guillermo Gregorio’s Madi Ensemble, and the Chicago Sound Map series. She studied old-time fiddle in Chicago, and bluegrass fiddle with Jerry Loughney of Above the Town.
JCP uses her experience in many genres (from classical, rock, blues, bluegrass and folk to experimental avant-garde improvisation) to meet the needs and interests of each student she teaches. Several of her current students play in WYSO ensembles; none of them enjoy avant-garde experimental improvisation like she does. But that’s okay.
